Cut Bank, Montana to Conrad, Montana - August 2, 2021

Waking Up in Conrad

I got moving this morning, determined to beat the heat. I was cycling by eight o’clock, which seems late in the morning, but I takes time to pack, eat, fill water bottles and lather up with sunscreen.

I’d like to get in the habit of starting even earlier. I’m going to need to if the heat continues.

I cycled thirty miles, non-stop, to Valier, arriving before noon. The temperature was perfect for the ride, helping to bring balance to yesterday’s experience.

Upon entering Valier, Folklore Coffee presented itself. I hunkered down, had a latte and talked with Beth and Lars for an extended period. I thanked the barista and moved over to the Valier Library for ninety minutes. There, I completed a blog post and waited out the heat; it was scorching.

At about 3:30, clouds began moving in. Thunder rolled, and the temperature dropped. I took off at four to get groceries and was on the road by four-thirty.

Feeling strong, I blew through the twenty-five miles to Conrad. It was lightly raining for the final third of the ride, which was pleasant.

I had previously spoken with the German manager of Pondera RV while sitting in the cafe. I decided to stay at the self-proclaimed “Playground of the Universe” for a mere $20 cash. Showers were included; quite a deal.

After cleaning up, I enjoyed my stay in the humid humming of the on-site laundromat. I wrote a little while watching people come and go.

Note: Laundromats seem to have special significance; I’m often drawn to their warm embrace.
