I had a good night sleep after the climb, waking up at around eight o’clock. My body was a little stale, but I felt ready to hit the road when the time came (11:00 AM).

After cycling for about seven miles, I stopped in Saint Mary for coffee, lunch and groceries. It was a slow start, one that I anticipated after the previous day’s effort.

| Saint Mary - Lunch Stop |
I left Saint Mary and took on a long haul in the grassland. The change of scenery was dramatic, and because of its newness, appealing. I listened to a long podcast between Lex Fridman and Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano. I also listened to a bit of music.

Immediately after crossing the Browning city limits (Blackfoot Reservation Territory), I had my first dog encounter. The big guy came down from some housing units to follow my turning pedals. His barking was a bit intense, but after a strong reprimand, he dropped away.

I contacted the Sleeping Wolf Campground; they let me know that they had tenting availability ($10) and showers. I made a beeline towards the offering.
Just before the site, I encountered two more aggressive canines. Both followed close, one eyeing my right ankle. I couldn’t shake them for awhile (In retrospect, I should have tried dismounting and standing my ground.). I calmed my mind the best that I could and started humming a tune. Music must soothe the savage because the two dropped off peacefully.
After checking in, I found the group of young male cyclists (the group headed across the country) in the tent area. They had also had problems with the dogs; one man had his rear pannier bitten and punctured. They were armed with bear spray for the next encounter (hoping it wouldn’t come to that).
I took a shower, talked with my parents and Beth and hit the sack. I woke several times to the sound of barking…
