Glidden, Wisconsin to Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin - July 21, 2023

Post Dip

This morning we awoke to our tents drenched in dew, a common occurrence in Wisconsin. With time to spare, we chatted while waiting for the tents to dry in the sun.

Post-packing, we cycled to the town of Butternut and indulged in a hearty breakfast at the Butternut Cafe, known for its “Garbage Plate” which Donald decided to try. I opted for the skillet. The cafe was bustling, but it could have really used an air conditioner – it was sweltering inside.

Our ride continued towards Manitowish Waters. Along the way, we stopped by a lake where I stripped down and took a refreshing dip, despite the pesky deer flies.

The final stretch to Manitowish Waters took us along a new bicycle trail into town. Donald and I noted that we should inquire about the planned bicycle trail on the south end of Whidbey Island once we're back home.

Trail to Town

We scouted the town and inquired about a room at the Pea Patch Motel. The bartender informed us they were fully booked for the next two years. After some deliberation, we resolved to camp freely along the bicycle trail leading into town.

Our bikes brought us across the street to a public park, where we took a swim and bathed in Rest Lake.

Later, after spending some time at the Pea Patch, we retraced our steps outside of town and pitched our tents. The mosquitoes were relentless – Donald later complained that he might need a blood transfusion. I set up my tent and immediately took refuge inside to avoid the pests. Inside, I arranged my sleeping pad, pillow, and quilt.

We covered fifty miles on our bikes today.
