Hayward, Wisconsin to Glidden, Wisconsin - July 20, 2023

Elk

The night at the casino provided a deep sleep. We packed up our bikes, which we had stored in the room, and headed for a short trip across the street to a breakfast-serving gas station. The sky was overcast and remained that way for most of the day.

As we journeyed northeast, we traversed some remote parts of the state. Early in the ride, we came across some elk grazing near the road.

At Clam Lake, we made another pit stop at a gas station for food and drink. Donald purchased a long-sleeve shirt. We took a break outside on a bench, where two different passersby offered insights about the road ahead and asked if we needed any assistance. The kindness of strangers never ceases to amaze.

Free Camping

Our destination for the day was the town of Glidden, which we reached around six o’clock. Up the hill, we discovered Marion Park. Camping was free, and a restroom was available. We pitched our tents and rode back into town.

The Shark

Dinner was at Lena’s Restaurant/Bar, followed by a few games of pool. I fared well in the first game against Donald, nailing a couple of bank shots. However, the next two games went south; I didn’t even come close to winning. Larry watched the final game, quipping that "I got my a%# kicked."

We chatted with Lena, the owner, who harbors ambitious plans for the town. After our conversation, we cycled back to the park.

We logged fifty-three miles on our bicycles today.
